My favorite stories begin where the pavement ends...

I come from a long line of avid gardeners and animal lovers, so it was only natural that I would inherit an affinity for living things.  Likewise, having an artistic eye also runs in my family - I was always encouraged to pursue mine, but I only ever dabbled here and there, without any real commitment.  Then in 1998, I received a digital camera as a Christmas gift, and my photographic journey began. I started by taking pictures of our family pets and flowers in my garden and greenhouse.  Then I graduated to song birds at our feeders and other wild critters.  Fast forward to 2010, and KRS Images was born.

As a life-long Marylander, I've always had a strong connection to the Chesapeake Bay and its flora and fauna (with a special interest in turtles and birds).  I've also found myself drawn to our area's historic tobacco barns (especially if horses and livestock now live there).  Plus, I'm a huge advocate of animal rescue and adoption, and have been for most of my adult life. Consequently, much of my time is spent outdoors and off the beaten path, often while volunteering with my local pet, equine, wildlife and nature conservation charities.

As a self-taught photographer, my interests are reflected in my images, some of which have been featured in print and online, and a few have even won awards.  But with each image I create, my goal is simply to tell a meaningful story and engage the viewer.  Whether my work ends up in a magazine, in a private home, or on social media, my true reward comes when someone tells me that one of my images made them smile, or caused them to stop and think.  If I'm really lucky, maybe they learned something new, or were inspired to act.  For me, that's what photography is all about.

As an artist, I specialize in creating animal and floral photo art, using natural light (and sometimes unconventional lenses) in a "painterly" style that is bright, colorful and detailed. Much of my pet and equine work is a result of volunteering and private commissions.  I also do a fair amount of local nature, farm and garden work just for my own enjoyment and to sell at art shows.

And every so often, I load my camera gear into my truck, and drive east until the pavement ends on Assateague Island. It's a magical place where a very special herd of horses has watched the sun come up over the Atlantic Ocean every day for the last several hundred years - and where they still live wild and free today, just waiting to be photographed...

I find endless opportunities to practice my craft in Maryland's idyllic rural areas and wild spaces - many of which are right here in my own backyard and in the surrounding neighborhood.  My inspiration comes from one of my favorite quotes:

"Art is not to be found by touring to Egypt, China, or Peru.  If you cannot find it at your own door, you will never find it."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
