My favorite stories begin where the pavement ends...
I come from a long line of avid gardeners and animal lovers, so it was only natural that I would inherit a love of living things.
Likewise, having an artistic eye also runs in my family. I was always encouraged to pursue mine - but over the years, I only dabbled here and there without any real commitment.
Then in 1998, I received a digital camera as a Christmas gift - and my photographic journey began. Fast forward to 2010, and after twelve years of practicing, KRS Images was born.
It would be fair to say that I'm the "outdoorsy" type, because I spend a whole lot more time outside and off the beaten path, than I do indoors or in crowded places. The fact is, I'm fascinated by flora and fauna (with a special interest in turtles), but I'm also drawn to historic buildings and barns (the latter, especially if horses live there). I enjoy training and grooming dogs, keeping poultry, horseback riding, gardening, hiking, birding, etc... And I've always been a huge advocate of companion animal rescue and adoption, and nature conservation - so consequently, I've spent much of my life volunteering with my local pet, equine and wildlife charities.
As a self-taught photographer, my interests are always reflected in my images, and I'm very proud to say that some have been published and have even won awards. But, in my opinion, that's not what photography is about. To me, its about creating timeless and compelling images that will make the viewer stop and think (and hopefully smile) when they see them - whether it be today, tomorrow, next year, or decades from now.
I specialize in creating animal and floral photo art, using natural light (and sometimes unconventional lenses) in a "painterly" style that is bright, colorful and detailed. To date, much of my work has been custom pet and equine photography for private clients and 501c3 organizations. I also do a fair amount of nature, garden and landscape work just for my own enjoyment and to sell at shows.
On this website, you'll find a collection of photos and artwork from my personal projects and wanderings. I share many of them on my FaceBook and Instagram pages as well, to help raise awareness of the rural countryside and wild spaces that are rapidly disappearing before our eyes. I believe these areas and their inhabitants have important stories to tell before they become memories of the past.
I find endless opportunities to capture those stories in images, right here in Maryland, near the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. My inspiration comes from one of my favorite quotes:
"Art is not to be found by touring to Egypt, China, or Peru. If you cannot find it at your own door, you will never find it."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
