Bluebird Wanda - 6/30/2017
(X7188, M, 2001 , P, 3, 1:51.1M $185,838, HIS MATTJESTY - BARRIER FREE - STORM DAMAGE)
Bluebird Wanda is a standardbred mare who was foaled in Indiana in 2001.
She was a pacer . Between 2003 and 2007, she ran over 100 times, and won more than $185K for her racing connections.
She also produced multiple foals, who went on to win thousands of dollars for their connections - and those foals went on to produce racing foals of their own.
In spite her accomplishments, at some point, Bluebird Wanda was sold to the Amish and was used as a buggy horse in Ohio.
At 14, she was sold at auction to a kill buyer for meat.
Thankfully, she was part of the United States Trotting Association's Full Circle Program, because in December of 2015, her former racing owners paid her bail and she was spared from a horrific fate in a slaughter plant.
Arrangements were made for Bluebird Wanda to go to a Maryland rescue for placement in a retirement home - however, her "retirement" would be very short lived.
By January of 2016, she was back to pounding the pavement for the Amish again, this time in St. Mary's County, Maryland.
The last time I saw her (on June 30th, 2017 - the day I took these photographs), she was 16 years old and had been bred several months prior. She was due to foal in the Spring of 2018.
Her new owner told me that he can get a good price for a foal from a mare with her pedigree and racing history. He said he knew lots of folks who were always looking for nice buggy horses.
That tells me that, regardless of her age, Bluebird Wanda will likely be bred again and again, and that she (and her future foals) will probably be Amish for life.
That is, IF she doesn't end up back in the slaughter pipeline first...
